Julie Colclough Gallery, Watergate Row South, Watergate Street, Chester.
There is usually a story hidden within my paintings, and this is no exception.
My grandfather's grandfather (John Dodd) lived around the corner from the gallery, next door to a young Randolph Caldecott who was to become a very famous artist and illustrator. The 1851 census showing the Dodd and Caldecott families is collaged into the background of my painting, along with old maps of Chester. Astonishingly we also discovered many Colecloughs living along Watergate Row through many decades, and documents show our building was sold together with Coleclough Court in the 1930s. Coleclough Court to the rear of the gallery has since been demolished, but we were thrilled to find this place has our name on it. It was meant to be!
